Active back
In some instruments with flat or arched backs, the back can be designed to be acoustically active—that is, sufficiently light and flexible to be set into vibration by the soundboard, through pneumatic coupling via the air cavity and through the sides.
This particular type of configuration, which requires careful design and fine tuning, makes it possible to enrich the instrument’s sound, especially in the low-mid frequency range.
The Chladni pattern that, together with the spectrum measurement, reveals an active back on a F-Jazz mandolin.
